Location
The inn is away from the urban hustle and bustle, half a mile from the hamlet of Falstone. Kielder Water (Europe's largest man-made lake) is the main attraction, where you can walk, mountain bike or do watersports. At night, stargaze at Kielder Observatory.
The nearest town is Bellingham, eight miles away, and it's a half-hour drive from the A69 between Newcastle and Carlisle.
By car: under 3 hours from York, 3 hours 30 minutes from Manchester and 6 hours 30 minutes from London. Free on-site parking available.
By train: London to Hexham takes around 4 hours; Manchester takes 3 hours 30 minutes - after which, it's a 40-minute drive to the hotel. Book trains to Hexham.
Style
This is a traditional country inn with low-beamed rooms, exposed stone walls and real fires. Decorative features include copper jugs and horse brasses. As well as the main bar and dining room, there are a couple of cosy snug areas.
Service & Facilities
As it's a pub there aren't too many facilities, but there are three separate cosy bar areas. The pub can arrange bike hire, maps and walking routes can be borrowed and there's a drying room for wet clothes and boots after a day's exploring.

Dogs are allowed in bedrooms, for a modest charge, but not in the main bar and dining areas.

There are eight bedrooms; some are in converted outbuildings adjoining the pub and have a small courtyard. Rooms are spick and span, in a simple cottage style with plain walls, cream-painted furniture and colourful cushions and curtains. Ensuite bathrooms contain showers only.

Restaurants & Bars
Expect home-cooked food, made with flair with ingredients sourced from the county, together with herbs, vegetables and fruit from the inn's kitchen garden. Pub classics such as steaks and pies are on the menu, alongside more unusual dishes like Moroccan baked cod with roast vegetable couscous and slow-roast Northumbrian lamb with rosemary. Save room for dessert - the brioche and marmalade bread-and-butter pudding is deservedly famous.
