Built as a manor house before transforming into King Charles II's hunting lodge during the post-civil war era when his mistress, Nell Gwynn, resided here, this red-brick building is decidedly majestic, with fireplaces throughout. A contemporary spa is housed in a newer wing.
Service is personal and friendly. There are lots of activities including both indoor and outdoor pools, bikes for hire, croquet and badminton.
