Visit nearby Assynt, and marvel at the surrounding majestic mountains and white sandy beaches - this is a stunning, sparsely populated part of Scotland. Here you can enjoy some of the best walking and climbing in the country; local craftsmanship also proliferates - you'll find painters, potters and all manner of craftspeople selling their wares.

The hotel is situated beside Loch Glendhu, near the bridge of the same name, on the North Coast 500 route.

By car: around 5 hours from Edinburgh, 9 hours from Sheffield and 12 hours from London. There is free parking on site.

Interiors are rather pared-back, letting the scenery do the talking, but are nevertheless stylish and comfortable. There's a buzz about the place but it still feels relaxed, and you will eat and sleep most satisfactorily. Keep in mind that broadband speeds are not particularly fast around here.

Welcoming hosts Sonia and Tanja are very approachable, and will dish out plenty of information and advice as required. Facilities are focused on the outdoors, with a laundry service and drying facilities for walkers, and picnics or takeaway meals for days out or the beach.

The hotel has grown over time, and the result is rooms of varying sizes, but all are decorated in the same understated colours with tweed accents. Most have king or super king sized beds; bathrooms are clean and bright.

This is the place to enjoy freshly-caught fish (you can even watch the langoustines being landed on the quay) but other dishes are also worth savouring; try the local lamb (served with black pudding) or venison with grilled apples and Pommes Anna.
