The hotel is on South Parade, nestled within an elegant terrace constructed in the 1740s by John Wood the Elder, a prominent Georgian architect in Bath. The Roman Baths - the city's most popular tourist destination - and Bath Spa train station are both just a five-minute stroll away.

The street is a cul-de-sac, so even though you're right in the centre of things, it's very peaceful.

By car: Hotel Indigo is 2 hours 40 mins from London, 2 hours from Birmingham and 3 hours 20 mins from Sheffield.

By train: London Paddington to Bath Spa takes 1 hour 20 mins. The hotel is a 5-minute walk from the station. Book trains to Bath Spa.

Think Georgian-infused with playful touches and you'll get a sense of the style. Public spaces are adorned with contemporary chandeliers and historical city maps; paint-splattered Regency-style portraits add a visually striking element. While this design is captivating, it might not entirely align with the tastes of traditionalists.

It may come as a surprise that a recently opened high-end hotel lacks a spa; however, the Thermae Bath Spa, a mere five-minute walk from the hotel, provides a wonderful alternative. Staff are exceptionally friendly and attentive.

Our preference lies with the snug Literary Hideaway rooms on the attic floor, furnished with faux book headboards and Anglepoise lamps. These rooms offer ample amenities, including complimentary soft drinks and a fridge stocked with fresh milk for your tea or coffee.

Drinks can be sipped in a clubby bar or on the terrace. The Elder occupies intimate, masculine dining rooms adorned with hunting-themed décor. Led by head chef Gavin Edney, the restaurant excels in contemporary British cuisine, particularly emphasizing game. Our delightful wild damson soufflé, crowned with shortbread and served with bay leaf ice cream, was truly exceptional.
