A short stroll will take you to Pallant House Gallery and the Novium Museum. A bit further out, you'll find Fishbourne Roman Palace, West Dean Gardens, West Wittering beach and Goodwood racecourse.

As its name suggests, the hotel is situated beside a section of Chichester's old Roman walls - but it's only a few minutes' walk to the city centre.

By car: over an hour from Brighton, 2 hours from London and 3 hours from Birmingham. Paid parking available nearby.

By train: London to Chichester takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, after which, it's a 5-minute taxi or 15-minute walk to the hotel. Book trains to Chichester.

The restored building is full of character with a sense of luxury - think muted contemporary colours and splash-patterned carpets with antique furniture. Details include wooden chests, chaise lounges and Venetian-style mirrors.

The hosts are happy to chat and make recommendations in the local area. There's a small, smart bar - perfect for pre-theatre drinks. There are only two secure parking spaces on-site (£20 per night), but nearby public parking is available.

Breakfast is served in an extension with Scandinavian-style pale wood cladding and, in summer, on the adjoining garden deck. There's a varied continental buffet breakfast, as well as cooked to order options including a full English, cheese on toast and pancakes. We loved the good selection of cheeses in the buffet.
