Dukes, Bath

Situated on Great Pulteney Street, Bath's grandest Georgian thoroughfare, Dukes is a must-visit destination in the city. With minimal passing traffic, the street is tranquil. Nearby attractions include the Holburne Museum, the city's premier art gallery, and, at the rear of Sydney Gardens, an entrance to a picturesque section of the Kennet & Avon Canal.

It's five minutes' walk along the street to the shop-lined Pulteney Bridge (another Georgian highlight); the city centre lies on the other side of the bridge.

By car: around 45 minutes from Bristol, 2 hours 30 minutes from London and 3 hours 30 minutes from Manchester.

By train: there are direct services to Bath Spa from Bristol Temple Meads (11 minutes), Cardiff Central (1 hour 5 minutes) and London Paddington (1 hour 15 minutes). The hotel is around a 15-minute walk from Bath Spa station. Book trains to Bath Spa.

The design seamlessly aligns with the historical essence of the 18th-century Grade I-listed property. The inviting lounge features a crystal chandelier, period portraits, leather sofas and a marble fireplace (with a log fire in winter).

Overseen by its hands-on owner, Carole Cameron, who chats to guests during breakfast - offering advice on sightseeing and more - the daily operations of Dukes are efficiently managed by the dynamic duo, Katie and her partner Tom, who reside on the property. Reception remains staffed until 10pm or even later.

From fairly spacious four-poster suites to cosy Snug Doubles on the attic floor, there's a range of rooms on offer. The inviting bedrooms feature mostly replicated Georgian-era furniture, some adorned with floral curtains and wallpaper, though some embrace a simpler, contemporary aesthetic. Bathrooms are somewhat traditional style.

Breakfasts, served in a yellow-hued dining room, are excellent. The menu features fruit salads, meats and cheeses, pastries and range of hot dishes such as pancakes, whisky-infused porridge and smoked haddock. Our favourite dish was the substantial full English-cooked breakfast, with bacon and sausages from one of Bath's best butchers and black pudding from Stornoway.
