CIVILIAN Hotel, New York, USA

The hotel is situated in Midtown Manhattan - between Hell's Kitchen and New York's theatre district. It's a great location for exploring the city.

Grand Central and Pennsylvania stations are both around half a mile away, and several subway stations are close by.

By plane: London, Manchester or Edinburgh to New York takes 7 hours, after which, a taxi takes one hour. Parking costs $50 per day. Book flights to New York.

There's a lot of exposed brickwork and while the lobby area is compact, there are plenty of public spaces - all of which have an inviting atmosphere. The restaurant is white-tiled with plenty of foliage and looks out onto the street. The cocktail bar has a marble-topped bar with leather sofas and banquettes. We loved the photos of theatre productions, given the hotel is in the heart of theatreland.

Facilities include the Rosevale Kitchen restaurant (ground floor), Rosedale Cocktail Room (second floor) and Starchild Bar (27th floor). There's regular live music at the cocktail bar, and DJ sets at Starchild. Guests can get a pass for the nearby health club TMPL. On the whole, service is friendly.

As with most New York hotels, rooms aren't huge, but they don't feel cramped either. They come in two categories: cosy and spacious. Facilities include a hair dryer, clothes steamer, safe, smart TV and air conditioning. There are no tea and coffee-making facilities or mini-bar.

The food and drink are superb in all three venues: the Rosedale Kitchen, the Rosevale Cocktail Room and the Starchild rooftop bar. The OnlyFans Martini is delicious, with two types of vodka, passion fruit agave, vanilla, saffron, gelato and bitters and a 'sidecar' of champagne.

Starchild: rooftop bar-lounge, light bites and cocktails. Open Tue-Sun, from 5pm.

Rosevale Kitchen + Cocktail Room: American cuisine, small plates and cocktails. Open daily, from 5pm (Kitchen closed Mon).
