MORE INFORMATION

Location

The hotel is only a couple of minutes from the promenade and the beach. There are also pubs and restaurants nearby - try the Black Dove or the Egg & Spoon. The Lanes and the Pavilion are a 15-minute walk.

Atlingworth Street is a quiet road which links the less raucous end of St James's Street to the seafront - so expect a peaceful stay and oblique sea views from some rooms.

By car: over 2 hours from London and Oxford, and 3 hours from Bristol. Paid parking available nearby (permit from hotel).

By train: trains from London Victoria and London Bridge take around an hour. The station is a 10-minute drive. Book trains to Brighton.

Style

This part of Kemptown is crammed with attractive Georgian townhouses. Blanch House is stacked with original character, such as its high ceilings and narrow stairways. Although decorated in muted tones, flashes of colour are provided by original Lyn Rohde artworks.

Service & Facilities

Kerry, the co-owner, is delightfully courteous and can magic up champagne, flowers or chocolates on demand. As a small boutique property, staffing is minimal and there aren't many facilities. While there's no restaurant, each room has a dining guide, written by a local food writer.

Bedrooms

All rooms are impeccably furnished, although some themes feel a little dated. For oblique sea views, book a room at the front of the hotel. Bathrooms are spacious - some have baths, while others have modern showers.

Room types: Cosy, Feature, Superior

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, luxury bathrobes, tea and coffee-making facilities, homemade biscuits, TV, free Wi-Fi

Restaurants & Bars

The ground-floor Champagne bar is a real treat. Alongside fizz-by-the glass, it serves cocktails and 'light bites', until 10pm. Breakfast is worth getting up for - not least for the chef's home-baked granola bars. A pile of American-style pancakes topped with banana, maple syrup and crispy bacon was pure gluttonous heaven.

Champagne bar: classic cocktails, fine wines, specially-selected champagnes from £8.50. Light bites available. Continental buffet (included) and cooked breakfast (extra cost) are served in the bar and lounge.
