Attractions like Inverary Castle and Dunstaffnage are almost an hour's drive away, but you'll be happy enough where you are - beside Ben Cruachan and Loch Awe, with a castle a boat ride away. This is a remote location, and that's part of its charm.

Owner Bennie Gray has put a lot of thought and care into furnishing this pretty, rambling Victorian house brimming with antiques. The hotel avoids being too stuffy and has a style all of it's own.

Borrow a boat or a bicycle to explore the surroundings; if you fancy fishing, there's a ghillie to help you. Other activites include archery, clay pigeon shooting and croquet, or stay indoors and improve your knowledge of whisky. Staff are approachable and friendly.

There are gorgeous views from the Master Loch rooms, but all have their own personality - bold design choices work here. If you'd prefer a simple contemporary style, ask for the boat shed; there's a stunning view of the loch and the opportunity to be an exhibitionist, with one wall being entirely glass.

Local ingredients shine through in excellent quality cooking; quietly sophisticated dishes include pan-fried brown trout with sea samphire and truffle-scented potato gratin. The traditional breakfast - including black pudding - is delicious.
