MORE INFORMATION

Location

Located in Portobello, it's a two minute walk to the beach and the mile-long promenade. Visit the amusement arcades, enjoy a paddle or even try kite-surfing. There are plenty of craft beer bars and trendy places to eat.

Although it feels a million miles from Edinburgh, the city centre is in fact only three miles away (a 15-minute drive).

By car: an hour and 20 minutes from Glasgow, 2 hours 30 minutes from Newcastle and 4 hours 30 minutes from Manchester. Free on-site parking available.

By train: Glasgow Queens Street to Edinburgh Waverley takes around 50 minutes, it's 3 hours from Manchester Piccadilly and 4 hours 45 minutes from London Kings Cross - after which, it's a 15-minute drive to the hotel. Book trains to Edinburgh.

Style

Expect a warm welcome and a meticulous attention to detail. When sunny, the conservatory doors are wide open, letting in plenty of light. Aromas of fresh flowers and baked goods fill the air.

A stay here is like a visit to an incredibly helpful, knowledgeable friend. Nothing was ever too much trouble and we were well looked after by hostess Angela.

Bedrooms

Rooms are 'zhuzhed' up to the nines - think plush carpets, lavish curtains and comfy beds with snuggly throws. Bathrooms are gleaming, but don't expect a spa-style space.

Room types: Double Room, Twin Room

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, hairdryer, tea and coffee-making facilities, iron, TV, free Wi-Fi

Restaurants & Bars

Breakfast consists of continental options followed by cooked offerings, with plenty of choice including smoked salmon and scrambled egg or the full Monty (catering to vegetarians and vegans too). You have to pre-order the night before. The Full Scottish fry-up was delicious - if you haven't had haggis, there's no better introduction.

Conservatory: dining room serving breakfast daily. The menu features porridge and kippers, as well as a full-cooked breakfast and lighter options.
